For touring and adventure riding, a baselayer is not just about staying warm. It needs to manage sweat when the pace changes, stay comfortable beneath protective gear, resist odour across several days and move with you when you are reaching for the bars, standing on the pegs or loading panniers at the end of the day. If it bunches at the elbows, rides up at the back or feels clammy under a jacket, it has failed the job.
Why merino works on the road
Merino wool earns its place in a riding kit because it handles changing conditions better than most single-purpose synthetics. Its fibres help buffer temperature swings: it holds a layer of warmth when the air is cold, while moving moisture vapour away from the skin as effort and temperature rise. That matters when a ride moves from a frosty dawn to a hot servo forecourt without a clean break to change clothes.
The big advantage is comfort over time. Merino does not feel like plastic against sweaty skin, and it is naturally resistant to odour build-up. On a multi-day trip, that can mean one baselayer gets you through more riding days before it needs washing. A cheaper synthetic top may work for a short commute, but touring exposes every weak point: odour after two days, sleeves riding up, cold sweat after a rain shower and fabric that loses shape under armour. Pack the layer that earns its space. Keep the rest of your luggage lean with compact, quick-dry travel towels rather than bulky cotton ones, and build your system around the conditions you will actually ride through.
