Your jacket and pants are there for protection. Your base layer should make that protection easier to wear for longer. It needs to reduce friction, manage sweat and avoid adding bulk at the wrong places.
Look closely at the details. Flat seams reduce rubbing under armour. Longer backs help prevent gaps when you lean forward. Thumb hooks can keep sleeves from riding up while you pull on a jacket.
